Leon Creek Greenway

Stretching nearly 25 miles through the heart of Northwest San Antonio, the Leon Creek Greenway is a must-ride. This mostly flat, well-shaded trail is ideal for road and hybrid bikes, with gentle slopes that make it approachable for all levels. But don’t mistake “gentle” for boring. You’ll pass limestone outcrops, cottonwood groves, wildflower fields, ponds, and picnic areas — plus one steep switchback near Eisenhower Park that’ll get your heart pumping.

Craving a little off-road action? The Greenway features numerous side trails perfect for mountain biking and hiking, winding through quiet forested stretches and rugged terrain. Dog-friendly and family-ready, it’s a beautiful way to explore San Antonio’s natural side, whether you’re chasing picturesque views, logging some serious miles, or simply enjoying the ride.

McAllister Park Blue Loop Trail

McAllister Park’s Blue Loop Trail delivers a delightful blend of challenge, scenery, and flow if you're looking for a more rugged ride in the city. This 6.2-mile singletrack traces the perimeter of the park, winding through dense forest, bamboo groves, and fields of bluebonnets and primroses under a shady, tree-lined sky.

Expect mostly dirt and soil trails with plenty of loose rocks, a few tight turns, and some moderate climbs that feel extra tough in the Texas summer heat. It’s a mountain biker’s playground, though you’ll also find hikers and trail runners navigating the twists. The trails are well-marked and easy to follow, but don’t forget the bug spray: Mosquitos are part of the experience.

With scenic river views and a path that dips in and out of quiet forests and busy greenway connectors, the Blue Loop is one of the best ways to get a true trail experience without leaving the city.

Salado Creek Greenway

Looking to clock serious miles while staying connected to nature? Salado Creek Greenway is the route for you. Spanning nearly 30 miles, this trail winds through tree-covered creek valleys, limestone bluffs, and shaded parks across San Antonio’s northeast and central corridors.

Best for road, hybrid, or gravel bikes, this route lets you cruise past rest areas, dog parks, playgrounds, and picnic spots, all along wide, well-marked trails shared by cyclists and hikers alike. Most of the ride is flat with gentle hills, but if you’re starting from The Rim, be ready for a steep climb out of the trailhead.

Expect tree-lined paths, towering pecan and oak canopies, and sightings of deer, squirrels, and blooming wildflowers. With access points at parks like Phil Hardberger and Walker Ranch, plus pedestrian bridges and boardwalks scattered throughout, Salado Creek is one of the most scenic (and rewarding) ways to reconnect with nature in San Antonio.
