Our Ski Service Offerings Explained

Even the best skis need a little TLC to carve their best turns. If you’re noticing signs of rust on the edges, white film on the base, or damage to your bindings, it’s time to bring in your skis for expert maintenance. Our ski shop in Charlotte offers a variety of professional ski services designed to maximize performance and extend the life of your gear.

Here’s a closer look at what we can do for you in-store:

Ski Tuning

Our complete tune brings your skis back to life with edge sharpening, base grinding, and a hot wax finish. We can also perform a binding function test as long as you have both boots on hand. Smooth edges and a fresh wax mean better grip, faster runs, and a safer ride.

Pro Tip: If you notice your skis catching or sliding unpredictably, it’s time for a tune.

Ski Mounting

Professional ski binding mounting is critical for both performance and safety on the slopes. Our Outdoor Experts in Charlotte, North Carolina, ensure your bindings are positioned and set properly for your weight, ability, and ski style.

Ski Waxing

Fresh wax isn’t just for seasoned skiers. It’s necessary for all riders because it keeps your skis gliding smoothly and protects the base from wear. Our ski shop offers quick belt waxes for a fast refresh and custom hand waxes for deeper restoration. Under your lifetime benefits, belt waxes are free, and hand waxes are discounted, so your skis glide like new.

Please note: Service times may vary, and some tune-ups can be completed the same day. We recommend calling ahead to confirm availability if you’re on a tight schedule.

From head to toe, your ski essentials should include a thermal shirt, fleece or insulated jacket, ski jacket, thermal leggings or long johns, knee-high ski socks, water-resistant ski pants, insulated gloves, ski goggles, a comfortable beanie, a helmet, and snug-fitting ski boots.

Need help picking things out? Our Outdoor Experts can help you build the ultimate slope-ready lineup and ensure that everything fits and performs the way it should.

Info About the Charlotte, NC, Area

While Charlotte doesn’t get ski-worthy snowfall, it’s perfectly placed for quick winter road trips up the North Carolina mountains. From first-time skiers to seasoned pros, the state has several ski destinations that offer full-blown resort experiences and different runs for every skill level. New to the ski scene? Our Outdoor Experts recommend starting with one of these local favorites:

Appalachian Ski Mountain Resort

If you’re looking for a welcoming, family-friendly ski trip, Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock, NC, is the perfect first stop. With 13 well-groomed runs, a nationally renowned French Swiss Ski College, a fully-lit ice skating arena, and night skiing available on all slopes, it’s a dream destination for beginners and anyone brushing up on their skills.

About a 2-hour drive from Charlotte, the mountain is beautifully organized and safe for kids, with a kind staff and stunning slope-side views that shine at sunset. While the resort’s smaller size and required online ticket reservations mean you’ll want to plan ahead, its cozy charm, “Midnight Blast” sessions, and consistently great snow make every visit feel like a mountain getaway designed just for you.

Pro Tip: Spots fill up fast, so be sure to purchase lift tickets and/or reserve a private lesson ahead of time! Student, senior, and military discounts are available. Visit the resort’s official website for more details.

Beech Mountain Resort

Soaring at 5,506 feet, Beech Mountain holds the title of the highest ski resort east of the Rockies, offering 17 trails, terrain parks, tubing, and night skiing until 9 p.m. It’s snow-covered trees and alpine village atmosphere — complete with the 5506’ Skybar and nearby breweries — make this resort feel like a true mountain escape.

Private lessons are first-come, first-served, and holiday weekends can get fairly busy. Arriving early to the slopes or visiting on weekdays or evenings after 5 p.m. makes for a smoother, more enjoyable experience. Since the on-site store is small with a limited inventory, stock up on high-quality winter gear at Sun & Ski Sports in Charlotte before your trip. Expect to drive approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes on light traffic days.

At Beech Mountain, you’ll enjoy a courteous staff, stellar ski instructors, flexible ticket options (4, 8, and 12-hour flex passes), and a mountain that feels like a hidden North Carolina gem. If you’re skiing with a group of 15 or more, be sure to submit your reservation at least 72 hours in advance. Equipment is limited, and bookings aren't confirmed until processed through group sales.

Sugar Mountain Resort

As North Carolina’s largest ski area with 20 trails and 125 acres of terrain, Sugar Mountain Resort delivers the most variety and attracts many intermediate and advanced skiers. From wide, scenic blue runs to challenging double blacks, plus tubing opportunities and an ice-skating rink, it’s easy to pack in a full day of winter fun. Bonus? It’s only around 2.5 hours from Charlotte by car.

Group skiing lessons are available for ages 8 and up, while private lessons welcome skiers as young as 4, making Sugar Mountain a great option for adventurous families with younger kids. Plus, holiday events like SugarFest, night skiing on select slopes, and live music add to the resort’s vibrant atmosphere.

Note: While Sugar Mountain is popular for its longer runs and high lift capacity, many visitors caution that weekend crowds, plus long lift and equipment rental lines, can impact the experience. Consider visiting on weekdays or non-peak times for the best trip. Want to skip the rental wait and head straight for the lifts? Get your own gear prepped at Sun & Ski Sports before heading to the mountains!
